Recreation Director

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and are ready for a month packed with fun! As you all return, please remember; you may sign up for any event that is advertised in the newspaper the day the newspaper comes out, (if the office is open) unless otherwise specified in the newspaper. Events are first come first served; don’t forget to sign up for a table when you purchase your tickets. Please do not place anyone on “your” table, unless they have purchased tickets. The office appreciates your patience as we are learning a new program that will make us more efficient in the office. We also appreciate you paying for events with checks as it is easier to balance the books! And the last reminder for you is when you are playing games, ie; hand and foot; Mah Jongg, pinochle, etc. please remember that Cinnamon Cove Residents have first priority over non residents to play.

Don’t forget the 2011 phone books are in the office, stop by and pick yours up.

Please make other arrangements if you are scheduled in the main room or room A & B in the clubhouse Wednesday, January 11th, 5:30 – 9:00pm; Wednesday, January 18th, 6:30-10:00pm; Wednesday, January 25th, 5:30-10:00pm; and Tuesday, January 31st, All Day for Room A & B due to Elections.

First a word from Yolanda for Dresses for Haiti, dresses made from pillowcases, then a wonderful lunch provided by the Party Guys, and our entertainment of the day Mentalist Mark Stone is one of the nation’s most sought after entertainers. He acquired an interest in E.S.P. and began developing his skills early in his senior year at the University of Maryland. By year’s end, Mark had put together a short show and he performed it for the members of his college dormitory. Doing that show for his friends was the perfect place to start. Then Mark tried his hand at a lounge in Baltimore that had an open-mic night. Mark did his five minute stint and the crowd wanted more...and more!!! Mark was hooked. Entertaining was his thing. He worked hard to hone his talents, and as his abilities grew, Mark was called upon time and time again to perform for dinner parties, birthday parties, and the like. His show grew more and more mind boggling. Comedy was added. Next thing you know, Mark was invited to perform at New York's Upstairs at the Downstairs. Then, Dangerfield's!!! Next came a call from the Dick Cavett Show, ABC's late night talk show. Mark appeared on Cavett's show on a Wednesday night and Dick Cavett couldn't heap enough praise on Mark. Right on the air, Cavett asked Mark to come back again... 2 nights later. And as they say, the rest is history and Mark was on his way. Mark now performs his show MENTALMANIA for all kinds of audiences. Those who have seen Mark on one of his many TV appearances—he amazed Johnny Carson, Oprah, Regis Philbin, Chevy Chase, and Maury Povich, just to name a few—or at one of the many thousands of shows he has done for corporations, colleges, cruise lines, or casinos all agree. Mark’s show is the most amazing and entertaining demonstration of mental gymnastics you’ll ever see!

Come down to Fort Myers Beach and enjoy the exercise and breakfast with other Cinnamon Cove residents. You may park next to the Bridge Restaurant or by the pier.  Everyone walks on their own to make sure that you are working at a pace that is best for you. At 8:30 we meet at the Time Out Restaurant for breakfast.

Bingo

Every Thursday night at 7:30 PM in the meeting rooms of the Clubhouse. Pay $1 for each card for the evening’s play. Play as many cards as you care to pay for. Prize amounts depend  upon the amount of money collected. All money collected is paid out in prizes.

Bocce

The Bocce Court is currently opened to all residents. If you can roll a ball, you can play Bocce. If you need the combination to open the lock on the storage chest that contains the equipment, please stop by the recreation office to sign up. Sign up sheets are located at the courts along with rules and regulations.

Book Club

The Book Club meets the second Monday of every month at 11:15 AM. To see a schedule of the books we will be reading over the balance of the year click here. You are responsible for purchasing your own book and everyone is welcome.

Chess Club

Interested in playing or learning the game of Chess? Well . . . now you can! The Chess Club meets Fridays at 10:00 AM in the meeting room of the Clubhouse. All are welcome regardless of level of play. Come on down, and if you have one, bring your chess set along. At the meeting, various chess topics are discussed and may be demonstrated with a large screen projector. Computer chess programs, with their challenging play and diversity of historical games and puzzles, are always welcomed.

Conversation Club

The Conversation Club of Cinnamon Cove is a very casual group of men who meet Monday through Saturday at the Clubhouse in the Main Room at 8:30 AM. It happens much the same as most men’s casual clubs. There is no set agenda, just good conversation about what ever subject happens to strike their fancy. Come join in the conversation or just sit and listen. It’s a good chance to meet other guys, set up a golf game or dinner date. You’d be surprised at what you can learn there from the experiences of others. Just put 25 cents in the box. What a deal.

Computer Club

The club meets on the first and third Saturday of each month during the season and once a month in the summer. The meetings are held in the meeting room at the clubhouse and start at 9:00 AM. The principal purpose of the club is to share experience and provide help to those just starting out in the cyberworld. The format of the meetings is a presentation on a chosen topic given by one of the advanced members, followed by questions and answers on that topic, with the remainder of the meeting dedicated to questions and answers related to issues and problems raised by those in attendance. All residents of the Cove are welcome. Cinnamonbark@AOL.com is the club’s electronic notice board operated by Bill Schmidt, and you can sign up with a message to that address.

Euchre

Come play Euchre on Thursday evening at 7:00 PM in the Main room. No need to sign up in advance, just show up to play. There is no cost involved and no prizes, just have fun and socialize. Score is kept only for bragging rights. Play ends promptly at 9:00 PM.

Hand & Foot

Come join the ladies for an easy card game similar to Rummy and Canasta. They play every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 1:00 PM in the Main Room of the Clubhouse. No need to sign up, just show up. It doesn’t matter if you have never played before, the gals will be glad to show you how. It costs nothing to play and there are no prizes, just a lot of fun and conversation.

Investing Group Round Table

The Investing Round Table meets every Friday morning at the Clubhouse Main Room at 9:00. We usually meet around one of the round tables in the room, unless there are other activities going on that drown out our conversations. Then we move into the meeting room or outside under the Pool Canopy. Sometimes you have to look for us. The group is informal, with no one trying to sell anyone anything. We exchange ideas and information. Sometimes people bring documents, newsletters and pamphlets to share. Men and women are both welcome and encouraged, and women usually do attend. We have good discussions about stocks, real estate, bonds, mutual funds, and once in awhile someone will bring up another investment vehicle. We learn from one another. Once in awhile we have a retired or semi-retired broker attend and they are welcome to join in. Sometimes we set up in advance a topic to discuss at the next meeting so people have a chance to think of questions or be prepared for the discussion. There are no dues and no requirements to join. Just come and participate in the discussions or just sit and listen.

Pinochle

Come play Pinochle every Wednesday night at 7:00 PM at the Clubhouse in the meeting room. Don’t worry about the crowds of people that might be in the main room for Pizza or Potluck. Just slip into the meeting room on the east side of the main room. Cost is 50 cents per night. Six games are played. Prizes for first, second, third and booby.

Poker

Monday night is Poker night at the Clubhouse starting at 7:00 PM. You will find several different games going on in various locations of the Club House. Some of the games are closed to newcomers, unless invited, but don’t let that scare you away. Come over and see if you can participate. Women usually have their own separate Poker game going too.

Social Contract Bridge

You can play in an organized bridge game four different times each week at the Clubhouse in the meeting room (east room off the main room). Sign up in the meeting room on the west wall. Be sure you are signing up for the correct day to play. If after signing up to play, you find you cannot, be sure to mark your name off the list.

Monday at 1:00 PM - Individual play (draw for partners) social contract bridge. Usually the less experienced play on Mondays. Everyone pays 50 cents and prizes are awarded from the money collected.

Tuesday at 7:00 PM - Partners play contract bridge. Cost is $1 per person per night. Prizes paid from money collected.

Thursday at 1:00 PM - Similar social non-partner contract bridge. Pay 50 cents and prizes awarded from money collected. Usually the more experienced players play on Thursdays.

Friday at 1:00 PM - Partners play Duplicate bridge. Pay $1 and prizes are awarded from money collected.
